How to motivate yourself?

Updated: Oct 22, 2022

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

So, what makes one person to be oneself? We always hear "motivated" as a quality of a successful person. That is the basis of a journey of continuous growth and accomplishments.

The source of motivation can be either extrinsic (achieved from outside), intrinsic (achieved from inside), or both. But intrinsic factors have an edge over extrinsic, as the outside factors are temporary, but the intrinsic ones reside with one till ones goal's achievement.

So, do you know how to be motivated and why it is important to be one?

Let us discuss all this here by now. Motivation is the reason for a person to do what the person is doing.

Many of us come out of bed without a drive or a passion to move ahead, the biggest hindrance to success. Motivation allows us to know our strengths, and skills and look forward to the desired growth.

Here are a few ways by which we can motivate ourselves -

Fix Goals and the action plan

"Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."

-William Jennings Bryan

To attain motivation towards something, we must write our goal and the directions to achieve the goal somewhere we can keep focusing after regular intervals of time.

Complete smaller tasks

Procrastination and unfinished tasks from the action plans form the biggest causes of a demotivated person. When it comes to tasks, well beginning is only half done. We can motivate ourselves by completing small talks from the moment we wake up. Chores, reading two pages of a book, doing ten sit-ups, etc., small but significant tasks, if completed can motivate us to start and then complete bigger tasks. Handling big tasks can be made easier by breaking them down into small tasks and then completing them. Rewarding ourselves after each milestone can also help us to stay motivated and get that big task done.

Start writing a journal

Writing down our highs and lows of the day in our journal can make us reflect on ourselves better. Highs mean the things that made us feel happy, positive, and alive, while lows mean the things that made us feel challenged, or upset. When we will read our journals in the future, we will surely feel motivated after seeing the hardships we have overcome and the joyful memories we get during our journey.

Workout regularly

Working out doesn't need to involve the gym always. But it must involve simple exercises that improve our physical strength to perform our tasks without physical ailments. If time is a constraint, then a few minutes of stretching and brisk walking can make us elated that we have exercised and thus prepares/motivates our body to be goal-directed.

Eat healthily

When we start eating healthier stuff instead of unhealthy ones, we see a difference in our bodies and mind. Changes like better metabolism, proper distance from diseases, enough energy to cope with our daily routine, etc. help us stay motivated.

Read books regularly

Books express thoughts of other people to us and that inspires us.

The biographies/autobiographies of great and successful people induce a desire in us to be good at the things we are doing through their tactics of overcoming challenges through their self-belief. Even, fictional books show us the values of life with creativity making an impression of proper management. Thus, a book with a message can change our lives and make us feel motivated.

Books that teach us good lifestyle habits and simple techniques that help us to move ahead of hardships or emotional imbalances must be prioritized.

Listen to music

Music is often said to be the soundtrack of our life. In seconds, the music changes our mood to great extent. What kind of music can motivate us to focus on our goals are different for everyone. So, we must prepare a playlist of our own to use. Some songs have powerful lyrics which can even motivate us beyond our imagination. Though it is an extrinsic motivational factor, it plays a major role.

Watch movies that inspire

Everyone has different goals at different times, one wants to be better at business while the other one wants better relationships with family and friends.

Researches show that visualization of scenes works better in understanding. There are movies with stories of the protagonist overcoming hardships or doing a deed that helps humankind or others. Extracting the main theme of movies whose storyline matches our goals surely motivates us to come out of hindrances in accomplishments. Also, movies help us to stay motivated entertainingly and dispel boredom.

Defend self-doubt

In order to feel motivated, we must analyze and remember our strengths. When we focus on what we can do, we can motivate ourselves to do more of that. For example, if one wins a prize for writing a poem or singing as a child, then perhaps that person will practice and improve to be successful in that field.

Maintain a positive social circle

We pay too much attention to not-so-good people and take good people for granted. Thus, thinking about who does small kind things and takes care of us helps our life to be simpler and happier. For example, many people don’t appreciate the support from their mother and father because their actions have become a part of our routine that makes them look ordinary. When we learn the importance of those actions, we become aware and motivated to do work that not only makes us satisfied but our surroundings proud and happy too.

“When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.” — Paulo Coelho

The desire to help someone who helps and cares for us motivates us to do better work and be kind.

Be your own coach

No one in this world can guide a person better than him/herself. So, collecting the adages that motivate us and reading them daily is the best way to get control in our hands. Whenever we feel down, we must show ourselves those sayings, become our coach, and motivate ourselves. Thus, motivation is all around us in what we do, in what we see, and most importantly, within us!

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” — Zig Ziglar

We just need to perform small-small things regularly on daily basis. So stay motivated with the above tips, add your own small tricks that suit you, and have a fulfilling life!
