Effective listening is more than hearing words, it's about creating an environment that makes the other person feel heard, validated, and understood. By embracing this skill, we can:
Build trust
Listening actively demonstrates that we value and respect the other person's thoughts and feelings. This fosters a deep sense of trust and mutual respect.

People feel more connected to the ones they feel heard and valued, which enhances dynamics and strengthens relationships.

Cultivate the skill of listening effectively
Being fully present - This means putting away the digital devices, making genuine eye contact, and focusing entirely on the speaker.
Understanding and responding- Effective listening hinges on our ability to truly understand others. So, instead of jumping to conclusions or formulating responses, we should focus on understanding the speaker's thoughts, feelings, and intentions.
Practicing empathy- Empathy is the cornerstone of effective listening. It means putting ourselves into other's shoes and feeling their emotions. This way we respond not just to the verbal but non-verbal cues of the people.
Reflecting on what we've understood - It's important to paraphrase or summarize what we have listened to otherwise the meaning of the whole conversation will become invisible. To grasp the speaker's point of view, we can also ask open-ended questions like, "Do you mean this..?", as asking yes or no, makes dead-end questions.
Be open to feedback - While we are trying to improve our skills, we must seek feedback from people and embrace constructive feedback.
Overcoming the barriers - While distractions, preconceived notions, and emotional reactions are the biggest barriers to becoming an effective listener, patience is essential. And, practice is the best master.
